Westslope refers to the western slope of the Colorado Rockies, where most of our food is grown.

Westslope Organics is the economic engine for our local food economy. It ensures that we have enough food to eat. It supports our farmers in growing nutrient dense foods that nurture your body and mind. We source our food locally to minimize food miles and eliminate reliance on cheap fossil fuels. We help make farming a reliably profitable business. We support our sense of community with mutual trust, and we foster the regeneration of our natural resources.

Our culture is based largely on the things we buy...

You’ve heard of “the market” right? These mysterious market forces drive our economy. The market is that thing that determines what businesses survive, what products are available to us, and where and how our money flows. Every time you buy something… a house, a car, your lunch, a box of straws, anything – you shape the market, and therefore everything around you. When we buy things that support our values, we help to create the world that we envision.

Preserve our natural and rural environment. We have peaceful and beautiful surroundings on the Westslope. Let’s keep it that way! When we demonstrate that our economy depends on a healthy environment, it helps us to protect our resources from practices that degrade it.

Create local jobs, not just in our business, but on farms all over our region. Sure, we will need people employed in our facility, but this pales in comparison to the jobs created on farms for increased production, distribution, and agri-tourism. Not to mention, all of those farmers need supplies at their local farm stores, and visitors that appreciate our delicious and healthy food can have it lovingly prepared by the best chefs in the state at our restaurants and cafes. Those visitors need places to sleep, and our hotels, B&Bs, and camping grounds will be happy to accommodate them.

Reduce food waste. Over 25% of food waste is on the farm. Not because of disease or poor quality, but because of how it looks. It’s not the right size for industrial processing or worse yet, it’s just too ugly to sell at the market. In bumper crop years, there is just as much premium quality food that simply doesn’t have a buyer. All of that delicious and healthy food going to compost, or to the landfill? Say it ain’t so! Let’s have that food be enjoyed and put money back in our farmers’ pockets.

Boost our economy. Keeping our money local helps to have it cycle in our economy over and over. Economists estimate that businesses that source locally help to cycle every dollar in our community 5 times over, providing 5 times more economic development than businesses that source inputs from outside the region.

Build our living soil. We support regenerative farming methods that build the biology of the soil, from microbes and fungi to worms and insects. This supports plant’s natural immune system, eliminating the need for pesticides, chemical fertilizers, and GMOs. Soil that is alive holds more water, and makes crops more drought resistance. The carbon sequestration potential of our soils is tremendous. That means that we have the opportunity to address climate change, simply by changing our farming methods. Our soil is the foundation of our true wealth, for generations to come.

Support a healthy and natural lifestyle You minimize waste, you exercise, and you reduce your carbon footprint… shouldn’t your food do the same thing? Ok, your food doesn’t exercise, but it sure supports you to have energy, vitality, and immunity from illness and disease. Supporting our natural vitality with a healthy diet and lifestyle is the best insurance policy we can have. We don’t just want to live to be old, but to have long, full, and rich lives that we can enjoy with those we love. And we want the same for them too!

Increase our food security. When we grow, process, and store more food locally, we can reliably feed ourselves in the event of oil price increases, natural disasters, or other events that can cut us off from our food supply. On average, only 3% of our food in the U.S. is produced locally. We keep the value of our land high for growing food.
